50 of The Best Horse Names We Could Think Of.


Well if you are getting a new horse, you may be considering a name.  Naming your horse can be fun and you know when you have the right name because you look at your horse and the name just suits them. 

Most horses will have a stable name, for every day use and a show name for competition.  So we decided to put our thinking caps on, do a little research and come up with the 50 of the Best Horse Names that we could think of.

We have organised the Horse Names into different categories, Dramatic Horse Names, Horse Names with a Weather Theme, Horse Names Based on Colour, Horse Names based on Character or a Feature, and Funny Horse Names to make you laugh. 

Dramatic Horse Names.

Dramatic horse names seem to fit those beautiful, elegant sporty types, such as top class, showjumpers, dressage horses, event horses or race horses.  You would frequently here names such as Apollo, Adonis and for a mare Athena and Artemis, all of which hail from Greek Mythology. 

Valegro, who is probably one of the best known Elite Dressage Horse’s of recent years has a name that is said to mean Gift of Gold, and he did just that by winning a Gold Medal in not one but two Olympics.

Plus our Irish Dressage Rider Judy Reynolds has a horse with a dramatic name, her top horse is called, Vancouver K.

Horse Names with a Weather Theme.

You will definitely recognise some of our Weather Themed Horse Names, they are probably among the most common especially in Riding Schools;

  • Misty – I have known a few horses called Misty over the years, they were always grey!  No Surprise there, then.
  • Thunder – Any horse I have come across called thunder, tended to be black.
  • Snowy –  Definitely a name for a grey, and possibly a cute pony;-)
  • Sunny –  Usually light in colour with a gold tinge in the coat
  • Frosty  – Usually a Grey.

Oh I have had a few of these in my time, a horse name based around the colour of the horse, here are the top picks;

  • Sandy – I called my first beautiful Dun Connemara Pony, Sandy, he was an absolute Dude!
  • Pal – A good choice for a Palomino
  • Goldie – Also a good choice for a Palomino
  • Blackie – For the black pony
  • Beauty – For the black horse or pony; a friend from Pony Club had a super black pony called Beauty, he was only 13hh, but frequently jumped any 14.2hh out of the picture, a real star!
  • Dapple – For the lovely dapple grey horse
  • Cadbury – for the dark brown horse
  • Coffee – for a dark brown horse.
  • Brandy – for the bay horse
  • Ginger – For the Chestnut that is a little hot;-)
  • Pepsi  – for a dark horse – very popular
  • Cola – Also for a dark horse, also very popular.  There was a super little cob mare called Cola in Kill International Equestrian Centre, in the 1990’s.  Oh showing my age;-)
  • Rusty – I knew a super little Chestnut Pony called Rusty, she was a real star!

Horse Names for Character or Feature.

I love naming horses for their character, or for a dramatic feature, here are some of our top picks, we have tried to

  • Houdini – The escape artist, actually the first foal I bred, kept escaping from the paddock, I thought Houdini was too long winded so he was called Harry instead.
  • Picasso – A mare we have that had an injury as a foal, that left her face slightly crooked we called her Picasso after the painters famous crooked lady painting. 
  • Mr Frodo – Also one of our horses, called after the Hobbit because of his enormous hooves!
  • Sailor – Always makes me think of Jake Lovell’s Showjumper in Jilly Cooper’s novel, Riders!
  • Rocket – A horse that likes speed.
  • Star – A horse with a star on it’s head, or perhaps a super star;-)
  • Happy – We had a mare that we called Happy, she had a lovely disposition and was always happy to see you.
  • Gillette – I did know a horse called Gillette, he was in his owner’s words “razor sharp;-)”
  • Champion – I knew a sweet little pony called Champion and he lived up to his name, he was called Champ for short and loved to Jump!
  • Cappuccino – For the coloured horse.
  • Domino – Also a good name for a black and white horse
  • Maximus – The Horse from the Disney Movie Tangled.
  • Peter Pan – I have known a couple of horses named Peter Pan in my years.
  • Charlie Brown – I have only known one Charlie Brown, and he had a lovely life with two sisters.

Funny Horse Names to Make you Laugh

These Horse Names we have thrown in just for Fun, some are a little rude, but all should give you a giggle, some may even spark your imagination when you are naming your own horse.

  • Hoof Hearted – Say it quickly;-)
  • Ice Melted – Again, say it quickly;-)
  • Harry Trotter – Still Laughing – Courtesy of Ranker.com, one of my favourites;-)
  • NightMare – Hilarious – Courtesy of Ranker.com, it would make a great name for a Black Mare.
  • Neigh Sayer – also funny – Courtesy of Ranker.com
  • Usain Colt – Not bad we thought, again found it on Ranker.com, has to be another favourite for me.
  • Get it Dun – A super name for a Dun we thought, courtesy of Ranker.com
  • Mr Ed – My horse’s stable name, because he reminded us of Mister Ed the Day he arrived.  However his Show name is not too groovy, it’s Mr Craggy – because he was born, behind Farther Ted’s House on Craggy Island, I guess it’s his claim to fame;-)

The last two are a bit rude, and they were submitted to British Horse Racing as names for Race Horses but they were not passed.  We thought we would share them with you to give you a laugh.  We heard them on the Graham Norton Show. 

  • Oil Beef Hooked – say it quickly with an Irish Accent;-)
  • Arfur Foulkesaycke – again say it quickly, made us giggle!!
